I could not believe what I was seeing today as Florian Merz had spotted what looked to be an updated It Came From The Desert by Cinemaware, for the Sega Megadrive/Genesis. At first I thought it was a joke, was this real? Was this some sort of trick by Cinemaware? But no it's real! Cinemaware spoke to me and confirmed the unreleased 1990 version will be released for the Holiday 2014 season as a limited edition version, with the production of the cartridge, case and manual working closely with WaterMelon Games, the creators of Pier Solar for the Mega Driver/Genesis.
As a little bit of history lesson about the original, It Came From The Desert was originally going to be a retail release in 1990 for the Sega Genesis/Megadrive and featured an action shooter genre, which was completely different from the original adventure home computer release such as the Amiga. You also played as a teenage pest controller (not a scientist), Buzz who had a bunch of bug busting equipment at his disposal.
It's a shame the game didn't get released officially as it would've been nice to play a more action orientated game than the original adventure version. Still though all is not lost as with today's news we could well be playing that un-released version this year on our Sega systems.

You can pre-order the game from the website and also look forward to a more in depth feature from us very soon!
Do you guys plan to re-release the Amiga version too? Alot of people over on GOG.com have been waiting a long time to see Cinemaware classics up for sale again.
ReplyDeleteI believe Cinemaware will be moving onto It Came From The Desert for other platforms once Wings is finished, at least that's what I remember from the Kickstarter discussions awhile back. Could be wrong, but I don't see why not :)
ReplyDeleteIs this simply the available beta ROM (released some years ago by Cinemaware I believe) put on a cartridge or are they any bug fixes / improvements implemented ?
ReplyDeleteHi Ted, I'm going to be getting the official report next week from Cinemaware. I have a feeling it's going to be a fully action packed release, not a beta or half assed. But until next week I wont be able to tell you any more than that I'm afraid :)
ReplyDeleteOooh!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteOOOOOOOOoooooh!!! X2
ReplyDeleteIt came from red alert! Remember that ;D
ReplyDeleteNo :p
ReplyDeleteAccording to one of WM members (?, they are planning some improvements to the existing beta ROM, although the original sourcecode is apparently lost and original coder not on board so the amount of changes may vary ip to final release.
