As many of you know David Braben is still working hard on the latest space combat/trading game Elite Dangerous, but there's another game out there that should be getting your attention which is inspired by the original 8-bit classic Elite. Titled, Oolite, which is inspired by that great classic, features all the best which we've come to expect of an open world space game that brings back memories of a golden age of gaming.
You can be a millionaire trader, a combat fighter, a feared pirate, a lonely miner and much more just like the original game. What's more Oolite features over 2000 space systems, space stations and plenty of goods of which to trade and upgrade your ship.
Another cool addition to the game, is customization: almost all parts of the game can be modified using simple free text and graphics tools and the developer states that over five hundred expansion packs are available, ranging from minor tweeks to new ships and giant missions.
So with all that said, today marks a new milestone for the developers with a brand new 1.80 release that features not just Systems, AI and NPCs improvements but an upgraded joystick config page, positional sound up to 7.1 surround, updated graphics, a tutorial for people who've never played the game before, more variety in parcel and passenger contracts, new HUD elements many more tweaks and more bug fixes.
Available to download for free via the main website.
Oolite runs on Mac OS X (10.6 or later), Windows (XP or later), and Linux
I wonder if David Braben would approve this version. :P
