In March of 2015 Nostalgia blew us all away with their C64 release of 'Commando Arcade SE'; a brilliant Arcade revamp of the 1980's C64 hit classic Commando. It was a faithful version to the Arcade and featured more levels, new level features, new graphics, a new scroller and much much more. Yet they weren't content with doing just Commando, as Nostalgia are hopefully going to release Ghosts'n'Goblins Arcade this weekend, perhaps even today Saturday! (See Update). True to form, this version will once again be a faithful version to the original arcade, whereas the original Commodore 64 version is somewhat different from the arcade version as it only features the Graveyard and Forest, The Ice Palace, The Floating Platforms and Firebridge and The Caves in that order. So if you thought Commando Arcade SE was brilliant, wait till you play this latest overhaul!
A little bit of history about the game before you get too exited! Ghosts 'n Goblins was a 1985 platformer game developed by Capcom for the arcades and has since been released over the years on several other platforms including the 8-bit such as the C64. It is the first game in the Ghosts 'n Goblins franchise where the player controls a knight, named Sir Arthur, who must defeat zombies, ogres, demons, cyclops, dragons and other monsters in order to rescue Princess Prin Prin. Regarded as one of the most difficult games ever to be released, yet oh so awesome in game play, featured multiple levels, undressing damage, new weapons, bonuses and different suits of armour.
But yet after all that is said, is this Arcade revamp any good and what else does it contain that makes it worthy upon our wall of excellence. Well we've got to say it is mighty impressive, this isn't just a slight tweak of the original game it is a complete overhaul, every level is as full to the original Arcade version but with two extra missions including the big boss battle. Furthermore Nostalgia and team have also added in new enemies, new bosses, a complete graphical overhaul of the C64 game by Steve and Mase and what we were equally impressed by is a new tune for each level, with tunes unique to each boss thanks to 6R6 and Laxity!
But that's not all as further improvements included a new intro sequence, game map, ending, game play changes to give you the best possible experience on the C64 and for anyone that found the original so damn difficult that gave up on the first level, included with the upcoming release will be a trainer with some mighty fine cheats, such as invulnerability and level skip!
Thus in our opinion you are all going to be blown away by this incredible arcade release of 'Ghosts 'n Goblins Arcade', it is what we could class as the definite version for any 8-bit gamer who remembers the original so well but felt it could've been so much better. The overhaul is incredibly smooth with no frame rate issues, great tunes played throughout and character reaction time which would impress even the most modern of gamers. I could list everything I've experienced in this Nostalgia release such as the new enemies, level detail but I would be repeating myself, so all I can say is this. When it arrives either today or tomorrow, if everything goes to plan in it's final test phase, you will find this game amongst the greatest releases of our time.
A huge thanks to Nostalgia and Steven for the chance to preview and release this news exclusive to the entire retro gaming community.
