Of all the game types I really enjoy playing are those made in a retro style with scan lines and lovely pixels. Sure there have been many of them in the last few years but when it comes to the latest game 'Badass Inc' by Motion Twin, this one is pretty damn special. Coming second place in the 32nd Ludum Dare and made with nostalgic 30 somethings in mind; Badass Inc is a very high quality action adventure that has a hint of Flashback but with the point and click enjoyment set in a Beneath a Steel Sky style universe.
In Badass Inc you play as a furry who trades in scalps and briefcases full of cash on a contract mission to eliminate a target in an unconventional way for the Ludum-Tek organisation. Thus if you think pulling out your gun and just blowing away your target is going to win you favours in this game you'd be oh so wrong.
It's incredible to think that this is a free game, it is probably one of the best looking and playing pixelated action adventures we've played this year so far even as an early prototype. Pretty much most of the game screen can be interacted with, that is resulted in sometimes comedic responses from your own character. The game also has a mix of Flashback style intense combat with high powered laser beams and adventuring of easy but challenging puzzles such as interacting with one found object and another.
But that's not all! As what's even more impressive is the attention to detail and the music. Which would certainly send a tingling sensation down the spine of those of you that have enjoyed Blade Runner. So yes if you have the time today, give Badass Inc a go, it's completely free and even features some neat little touches such as the loading sound of a floppy right out of an Amiga!
