We've just been given an exclusive Indie Retro News look at a brand new in development ZX Spectrum underwater action game, developed by Neil Parsons (Program Bytes 48k) that is due to be released this Sunday. Created using the Mojon Twins MK2 engine, Aquanoids features bright ZX colours, underwater enemies such as squids, and the main character looks like a blue minion that's been mutated from those great movies Despicable Me and The Minions(2015)
Currently available for both English and Spanish in a beta download, you play as the robot AQ-5 and are tasked with exploring the depths of the ocean to recover batteries and lost items. Be warned though there are plenty of deadly enemies like fast moving squids and side swiping crabs that will hurt you if you get too close.
As for the game play, it's certainly an enjoyable game even in it's current beta phase. I found the game easy to control, items nicely placed for collection and usage, and the enemies a challenge but not so difficult to avoid as to be frustrating. The only issue I came across was once I fell into the plant eater like enemies, the hit detection went crazy and I could not jump out. Thus I died very quickly as my life force was sapped to 00. So I hope this is fixed for the final build.
In regards to the overall detail of the game this was above average, especially with a nifty looking UI, multiple landscape types and main character detail. I would have liked however, better detail with the enemies, animated background fish and even an in game tune would've been nice. But as we said this is a beta, so this game still has some time for improvement.
