The above screenshot might not look like much in the grand scheme of things, but this is actually a rather impressive Pico-8 demake of the hit classic ' Alone in the Dark ' which was first released for the PC by Infogrames way back in 1992. An original game that not only appeared in the Guinness World Records as the first ever 3D survival horror game in the Guinness World Records Gamer's Edition 2008 edition, but it was also the first of two games to use polygonal characters over pre-rendered backgrounds. An all time classic indeed, but the news of today is a developer by the name of NuSan has done a small demake for the Pico-8, and it is now called ' Alone in the Pico '.
According to the developer behind the game, this is but a small demake of Alone in the Dark, and allows you to explore and to find your way out of the top two floor mansion. It is as close to the original as possible but there is no fighting and the interaction has been made simpler for the Pico-8, although you can play it on your PC in a browser as well. It is in fact a very impressive demake and an incredible achievement for the Pico-8, one I hope will be turned into a full game!
"A suspicious suicide. A chilling curse. A malevolent power. And a wicked dark secret. This is Derceto ... Choose between Emily Hartwood and Edward Carnby to explore this virtual adventure game inspired by the work of H.P.Lovecraft."
-The 3D meshes of the characters are ripped from the original game.
