PicoBreed - Alien Breed from the 90's gets a Pico-8 Demake
What do you get if you mix the movie Aliens with an Amiga top down shooter styled to that of Gauntlet? You'd probably get Alien Breed, which was released in 1991 by Team 17 as a fantastic action packed game, that required you to blast away Alien swarms while also trying to find that lift shaft down to the next level. Well if you remember that game, I know I do, you'll be pleased to know gabrielcrowe has done a demake of the game on the Pico-8 as a fun homage to the original.
I was able to have a short go of this today and let me tell you PicoBreed is a very nice game indeed, and nearly all the elements are there to really give it that Alien Breed vibe. The Aliens come at you just as they do in the Amiga version and keys need to be found to unlock doors. The only thing I found to be a bit of a turn off wasn't the gameplay as it's very good, but the game is a little too colourful for my liking, in which Alien Breed itself was a little more dark in nature. Still though, I'd highly recommend playing this demake either on a real Pico-8 or in your browser.
