Montezuma's Redux - 1980's Atari 8-bit Platforming classic, overhauled [Atari 5200 UPDATE]

Even more great retro gaming news for this week, as we have just learnt that TIX with the help of Paul Lay, has released an Atari XL/XE rom hack of 'Montezuma's Revenge', which overhauls the game giving it new lease of life. Montezuma was originally released in the early 80's for the Atari 2600, Atari 5200, Atari 8-bit, Apple II, ColecoVision, Commodore 64, IBM PC, Sega Master System, and even the ZX Spectrum and is still enjoyed by many to this day.

Unlike other versions of the game, such as Montezuma Again which adds new levels and changes the item and enemy location. Montezuma's Redux however has a new explorer character, new skulls, new snakes, a new spider with separate sprites, new objects with animated swords and keys, new sparkly diamonds, modified walls and much much more. So yes if you loved playing the original Montezuma in the 80's, you owe it to yourself to play this lovely overhaul by TIX and Paul!

UPDATE : Rather than make a brand new article, I've recently been informed, that the fantastic version of Montezuma's Redux which was originally released for the Atari XL/XE way back in 2020, has now been ported over to the Atari 5200 by RB5200 with the help of TIX and Playsoft. As in the words of the creator. "Here is a 5200 release of this great game hack. There is a new falling death animation by @TIX , thank you tix and a special thanks to @playsoft for taking the time to add in all the proper animations and ending. There are two files, what's the difference ?
  • Montezuma's Redux - No ending
  • Montezuma's Redux (final) - has a ending.
