Quake Engine running on a ZX Spectrum looks mighty impressive!

Even though we were rather late with the news update as a bad headache got in the way, but if you have a ZX Spectrum and want to play something that's very impressive, especially as it is running on an original 8bit machine, is the latest release of a fully playable Quake engine created by Alone Coder together with Dragons' Lord; an engine running at an impressive speed on a standard ZX Spectrum 128k. In light of this news, we have some more details below and two videos from both Modern ZX-Retro Gaming and Saberman.

According to ZX-Retro Gaming, "this is a fully playable Quake engine with moving enemies running at impressive speed on a standard 3,5 MHz ZX Spectrum 128k. The engine also has support for 7 and 14 MHz, where the 14 Mhz version also has a second floor. You play with W, A, S, D and cursor keys. Tap and Scl files is available in the download. In this video it is the 7 MHz version that has been played on an original 3,5 MHz machine, and it runs fine, but if you have a machine with 7 or 14 MHz it will run faster. If that wasn't enough to surprise you, this engine, even running at 3,5 MHz, totally beats the old Freescape engine that were used in the 80s games. Try it on your Toastrack and be impressed".

  1. A true 3D engine, textured animated 3D objects etc. at usable speeds with a 3.5Mhz CPU is of course an extraordinary feat. At 14Mhz it even looks very playable in terms of speed, if there's any working time left for game logic. In the case of an adaptation for the 28Mhz ZX Spectrum Next with attributeless colors, it could be even more interesting and fully playable.

  2. Surely you should be playing with the Q, A, O, P keys? :-)

  3. Is this really a Quake engine or more of a Quake-like FPS engine? Does it load Quake BSP and MDL files?
