Last Ninja 2 - After 9 years of development an all time classic arrives on the Atari XL/XE

What a week this has been, full of incredible news stories such as Turrican 2 AGA on the Amiga, to TERRESTRIAL on the C64. Well we haven't finished with the greatness just yet, as we have been told that one of System 3's greatest action adventure games from 1988 'The Last Ninja 2', has been fully ported over to the Atari XL/XE by Jakub Husak / Peter Scott after 9 years of development.. Yes indeed this classic game which appeared on the C64, ZX Spectrum, Amstrad CPC, Acorn Electron, BBC Micro, Amiga, Atari ST, MS-DOS and NES, has been ported with all levels, game ending and a slight change of graphics.

As noted by Kuba:"The game is practically a faithful port of the BBC Micro version. For its needs, a simulator of some functions of the operating system of this computer was created, so as to "not mess around" when rewriting the functionality, and later during the tests. In addition, a sound effects processor was created, compatible with the one in the game. It has quite extensive capabilities, although this is not heard in this game and takes up almost a kilobyte, while the organization of the screen is typical of the C64, i.e. "graphics character mode"".

"The game takes up 25 kB on the BBC Micro (actually the entire memory, which is 32 kB), of which 7 kB is for level data, and the rest for code, ninja character, all enemy characters, items. Characters are compressed in the Atari version with the RLE algorithm. The only visually changed element is a separate color palette for the right panel. And a lamp on top of a skyscraper, like the icing on the cake."

  1. Really nice effort. While the title music is fantastic there is no ingame music as far as I can tell. Some omissions are notable like no working traffic lights in the second level, no animations for the crocodile and more. All in all this is pretty good though.
