We turn our attention away from the Atari XL/XE and Commodore Amiga for this new years update, as if you're looking for a high quality MSX game to keep you company through 2023, you may be interested in playing Maltanto's latest game of 'Suite Macabre'; an adventure game in which you impersonate a shy research assistant in search for his mentor, Dr. Kowalski who has vanished at the abandoned Dunwich Hotel.
Although I haven't had the chance to play the game myself, in terms of the gameplay however according to the website. You must search through the Dunwich Hotel while taking care of the strange and disturbing wandering creatures that are crawling through many of the dangerous rooms. To achieve your goal, you will have to interact with the environment, pick unsuspected objects and use them in the most strange places and… bosses. Fight bosses in memorable battles between light and darkness!
Wow! This is gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteI agree, it looks fantastic! I like the incidental sound design too!
DeleteWow Impressive graphics and video games that make me nostalgic ... will it be released on cartridge?
ReplyDeleteSeems we missed the boat on that one. I guess a MSX cart was released in late 2020 and a ColecoVision cart in 2021. I've never heard of the game until now, so news to me.
DeleteIt was actually released in cartridge format first. I got one maybe two years ago.
DeleteWhat an incredible cover illustration!
ReplyDeleteVery attractive Lego-style graphics with lots of colors and clarity in the foreground, while the backgrounds are dark and filled with cast shadows. Lovely details like the rain animation inside the windows add considerably to the atmosphere.
ReplyDeleteThe game itself looks like a cross between Jet Set Willy, Dizzy, and Maniac Mansion.
In short a must for me to try. Would love to see it on C64, but has then to be done expertly to not lose the atmosphere.

In short a must for me to try. Would love to see it on C64, but has then to be done with UTMOST CARE to not lose the atmosphere.
I played the game for about 2 hours today on the MSX. It's great, very nice animations, great environmental sound design, some nice platforming and lots of exploring to do in pretty diverse environments. Have seen like a 30+ unique screens with all kinds of different stylistics design. And tight controls too. It's hard, but fair; strongly recommended, the digital download is only $3 !
