While many of you have enjoyed playing KnifeGrinder's recent release of Lester; a high quality metroid-vania for the C64. It might be worth keeping an eye on KnifeGrinder's other game that has just been announced, and it's called 'BONE DRY'; An upcoming side scrolling action/adventure with RPG elements in development for the C64. A game which is also inspired by great Sega Genesis classics like Monster World III & IV. To coincide with this news story, the creator has also shown off some very early footage of the game which can be viewed below.
Here is what the creator says about the game " The Sega Mega Drive/Genesis was my third step towards my gamer career, and I'll always treasure it along with the C64 as one of my favorites ever. I loved in particular its platformers, so colorful and balanced. Coming from the C64, games like the Monster World saga, Quackshot and Ristar seemed like miracles. At the time, there was nothing like this on the little Commodore and it took until the modern era to have some games that could rival the console classics".
"So, when I was thinking about what to do after Lester, it came naturally to me to combine my two greatest gaming passion and write my own game inspired by 16-bit era platformers but with some contemporary indie twists. Here's the first sneak peek of BONE DRY, a new sidescrolling action/adventure with RPG elements in development for the C64. Inspired by great Sega Genesis classics like Monster World III & IV, it will try to recapture the essence of early 90s era 16-bit colorful platformers on a humble 1982 microcomputer".
"The whole game is currently being prototyped on PC to speed up the gameplay design, but today is the first milestone in the C64 development side (I have an engine!!!), and I made a little video to celebrate this goal. Coming when it's ready, definitely not soon. It will take a fair amount of time to translate into bytes what's currently on paper".
Very smart looking and a highly unusual style for C64. The mix of hi-res and double-width pixels works well here because of the stylized look using clean & simple shading on the double-width aka multi-color chars. A very different approach compared to say, Spooky.
ReplyDeleteTop rows seem to be Extended Color Mode and there also seem to be some rare sprite-on-background overlays to spice it up even more?
This looks fantastic!
ReplyDeletethis looks slick as hell. i just want to play it when i see the movement of the character sprite. it looks tight! also the graphics style is sublime! hope the rest of the game will have this level of quality.
