Zeta Wing II - Sarah Jane Avory's upcoming C64 Parallax Shoot 'em up shown off in new trailer!


Sarah Jane Avory has created some fabulous C64 games throughout the last couple of years, from the amazing Soul Force to Zeta Wing and even Briley Witch Chronicles. Well here we are with another Zeta Wing II news update, as thanks to Per Ola Eriksson contacting us early this morning, he has told us that Sarah has shown off the game in a brand new teaser trailer! A trailer which shows not just the levels you'll be playing through, but also that awesome parallax scrolling and multiple enemy types.


Zeta Wing II looks to feature many challenging stages, each with their own graphic style, lots of parallax scrolling as mentioned above, multiple weaponry upgrades, end of stage bosses, PAL and NTSC compatible, simultaneous music and sound effects, and all of this programmed, graphics, and sound by Sarah Jane Avory with hopeful publishing through Bitmap Soft. So yes if you loved any of Sarah's previous games such as Soul Force and Zeta Wing you are sure to like Zeta Wing II which is
coming soon.

  1. This actually doesn't look at all bad. The stages are much better flashed out than in Zeta Wing. I only hope you can keep your weapon when you die this time :) Also, the video above reminded me a bit of Tyrian at times; I'd really like to see is someone trying to bring that game to the C64...

  2. mmmh, no way it would look that way with c64 palette.
    I mean, i appreciate that wonderful work, but presenting it that way is like cheating.

    1. There's a number of ways to hack the C64 color palette to get a bit more out of it, and many examples of games that have taken advantage of those hacks. Do a Google search...

    2. It's just super saturated colors, that's no hack but an emulator setting... same as turning the color on your tv way up... it hurts my eyes just stop that

    4. This pallete is correct - you can use the tv controls as you wish. There is no fixed palette. On emulators use colodore!

    5. ??? Looks a standard C64 palette to me. Probably instead of the more famous pepto palette this is capped with the colodore one which I actually prefer since it's more faithful to what I see on real machines (I know there's a lot of mathematical work behind pepto but I never, never seen on CRT colors so washed out)

    7. It's just saturated. Most people didn't set the saturation on their TV correctly for the C64 which is why it always gets accused of having a washed out palette.

    8. but that doesn't make sense. if the saturation on their TVs was correct for everything else they viewed on their TV's then surely it's the C64's palette to blame? :P

  9. This game is beyond Amazing.. I am not easily impressed. But 3 things I would change: 1. Needs better catchy music composition (I know the one in the video is either not in sync or just added for effect) and 2. Publish it under the same publisher as Zeta Wing 1...that Witchsoft logo looks .....meh..... and it will be offputting to many people. 3. A more ORGANIC (Liquid-y perhaps) shooting/Fire-ing sound. it has to be the most pleasant sound in the whole game (Like Galaga...when the ship shoots its like a Gurgle and sounds so memorable)
    The More fleshed out levels look better! and there seems to be MORE differences in color level to level, which Part one almost all looked the same as far as colors. I wasn't inspired to keep playing to see the next DIFFERENT beautiful level. THIS does that alot better...and the weapons seem much more Arcade-ish quality.

    1. but witchsoft is Sarah's development name, not the publisher. The first Zeta Wing was by 'Witchsoft' too but the physical version published by Bitmap Soft (in an oddly colourful box)

    2. What's wrong with the Witchsoft logo? I like it. I agree about the music though. Music is always the weak point of Sarah's games. She knows how to make good SID sounds and her compositions in the Briley Witch game are fitting the moods of that game pretty well. However, the music in her shmups isn't all that fitting, and she obviously doesn't really know how to compose a melody or a chord progression. Which is okay, nobody is good at everything. Still, I always hope she'll let someone help her with that part of her game development. That would make her games even more awesome.
