We've featured a number of Arcade to Amiga conversions/ports throughout the years, from the more recent Super Xevious, to Flying Shark, Green Beret and even our personal favorite Wonder Boy by AcidBottle. Well if you're looking for even more Arcade like updates on the site, then we have just been told by our good friends Liqmatrix and Earok, that basementApe is still working on the Arcade to Amiga game of Rastan; a side-scrolling hack and slash video game released by Taito for arcades in 1987, which was also a critical and commercial success!
Here is what Mobygames says about this excellent game back in the day "Rastan features five levels of hacking and slashing gameplay with a boss at the end of each level. Numerous enemies assault you on your journey such as flying demons, chimeras, valkyries, piranhas, undead and more. Fight through to the end and save the land of Lograth from certain doom. The game features different weapons such as axes, maces and fire swords, each with its own attributes like extended range or attack power. Armour can also be picked up in the forms of shields, cloaks and armour, reducing the damage from enemy attacks. Other items include rings (increase the speed of your weapon) and jewelry for bonus points".
While the creator has now created a website for the game, Earok recently did a Scorpion Engine development stream on Twitch, and the game can actually been seen running at 01:19:07

Excellent work. Wow !
ReplyDeleteLooks better than the arcade!
ReplyDeleteI wanted to say the same! For real it looks better then arcade to me.
DeleteI think mostly it does but I don't know about those wall tiles going into darkness which makes the game look a bit bland in places. The arcade had solid rocks and such
DeleteGracias por el juego se ve impresionante
ReplyDeleteThis is looking fantastic!
ReplyDeleteLooks and Sounds amazing
ReplyDeleteReally well done. The improved background gf/xs really enhance the game.
ReplyDeleteLooking forward to seeing the finished version.
Amazing work, can't wait for the final game!
ReplyDeleteThis looks great. Can't wait for the final version
ReplyDeleteEpic !!!
ReplyDeleteGreat first level ! Congrats.
ReplyDeleteTremendously cool! It looks so strikingly different than the arcade - and in such a fitting, well tought way - that at first I tought that the graphics were redesigned. Looking a bit closer, it seems they were mostly recoloured and retouched, not fully changed. And doing so with a palette that was a bit darker was a really good idea: the stuff already looks like Conan comicbooks from the late 70s drawn by Buscema/Alcala, so its natural that pushing for colouring in the style of Marie Severin would amp the whole thing!
ReplyDeleteThank you! I'm a big fan of the John Buscema/Alfredo Alcala duo myself, magic stuff :) The sprites are mainly retouches and cleanups yeah. What looked good on old CRT's doesn't hold up as well on modern screens
DeleteStunning, great to see things like this happening to Amiga! :)
ReplyDeleteThanks everybody for the feedback and kind words :))
ReplyDeleteThanks everybody for the feedback and kind words :))
ReplyDeleteNo no.... Thank YOU! It is bloody awesome dude and we can't wait to play the final release :)
DeleteFantastic rendition of the arcade! backgrounds are a little sparse at the beginning but become really great inside the temple! The sounds are really good and.in my opinion, playability wise it's better than the coin-op which was too obtuse and difficult in many areas...great job! If you can try to improve the first background(with clouds, statues or animated waterfalls) but it's already great!!
ReplyDeleteI wished they made a SNES version using the full Sony Sound chip
ReplyDeleteThis looks absolutely outstanding. Rastan was my favourite arcade game in the 1980s and I always wanted an Amiga version. I have a couple of technical questions, if the Devs are still reading this:
ReplyDeleteIs this really running on a stock Amiga 500 with 1MB of RAM?
It appears to be running at 50 frames per second - which is impressive. And I counted up to five walking enemies on screen simultaneously - plus a couple of bats - and no slowdown. Well, this seems like much better performance than any other Scorpion engine game I have seen. Has there been some extra code added to it?
Lastly: in the first level, is there any possibility of including some sort of parallax effect - such as the tops of distant mountains in three colours? The mountains wouldn't even need to move - just be drawn to be very far away - and you'd just need the tops of them, tapering away as if the rest of them are covered in mist. It's a small detail - and I appreciate that you may already be pushing the Amiga to the limit - but it would add a great sense of depth and atmosphere.
Otherwise, I 100% congratulate you on the redesign of the graphics. I generally prefer the Amiga graphics to the arcade version - particularly the castle interior.
