Highly anticipated conversion of the classic arcade game Turbo Outrun makes its debut on the Commodore Plus/4!

Long ago in the days of the 8-bit and 16-bit era, people around the world played on Arcade machines or on their home computer, racing around tracks with the feeling of intense speed just to become the number 1. From games such as Outrun or the famous series of games Lotus and XJ220 on the Amiga it was a time I remember fondly. Well here we are with a very special announcement if you also played Outrun back then. As TCFS has released the highly anticipated conversion of the classic arcade game 'Turbo Outrun' which makes its debut on the Commodore Plus/4!

Surprising us earlier today, here's the full announcement direct from the Plus/4 World Facebook page. "And so, almost quietly, in mid -January, here is the new incredible pseudo-conversion from the increasingly incredible Sasvári Tamás aka TCFS! It is no coincidence that it is recognized as "Maestro" between two distant golden eras of the Plus/4, and it's no coincidence even the release day: 14 January 2024, happy 40th anniversary to the Commodore Plus/4!!"


"To celebrate this happy anniversary, the Maestro, with the help of Csaba Unreal Kemeri (Unreal/MX) for the graphics and the extraordinary contribution of Csabo/LOD, which has rewritten the entire soundtrack to let it literally shine on TED, here comes Turbo Outrun!"

"Now this has been a very hard task to achieve, the author had to change, adjust, renounce, move and re-code from scratch tons of the features which decreed the success of the original for C64. All in all, this IS Turbo Outrun, but this IS NOT Turbo Outrun, but this IS it anyway! There's a completely innovative way to manage with the turbo, there's no need to worry about great impacts or road bumps or adverse meteorology, but there's also a new logic for the opponents, a new scoring system and even a challenge for you to have your best score into the hall of fame"

    2. The C64 has a good sense of speed but the road colour is the same as the surroundings, and somehow I just like the graphics on this Plus 4 version more.

    2. If i remember right from my C64 days in C64 Turbo Outrun's Version -unless my memory fails me-in most cases there were only one opponent car too.

    4. I just looked at the original C64 version and there's a whopping 3 cars on the screen to pass on the same screen.

    5. Fair enough, I was looking at the original Outrun on the C64, not Turbo Outrun which does seem to only have 1 other car on the screen at a time.

  6. Yawn! Pitstop II, Great American Cross Country Road Race and Super Cycle are the only C64 racing games with 3D optic, that really are fun to race. This one is boring, like it is on the C64, as well as Outrun. By far not comparable with the Arcade versions. Sorry

    2. That's true. Nevertheless the racing experience is boring. If racing games today on 8-bit systems would have driving experience like in Pitstop II and racing tracks like in Turbo Outrun or Outrun, than it would be more fun to play and not only look good. Same applies for Super GP 64 (boring as well). And to make it clear, Pitstop II is boring as well if you play it longer but the way how 3D optic is done for the racing track itself is very cool. I haven't seen a more perfect way to play a racing game like in Super Cycle on the C64. That's my opinion. I am sure a lot know what I mean.

    3. There are plenty of other pseudo-3D racing games for the C64 that handle perspective very well, e.g. Buggy Boy, Turbo Charge or Power Drift. I think those last two could also convert fairly well to the Plus/4, since the animation is mostly character based.

  7. You are right, Buggy Boy ist also very good regarding 3d-optic. Power Drift does not convince me but Turbo Charge looks interesting. Will have a closer look later. Thank you

  8. It's another great port from TCFS and his crew! I know that it's a real magic in two sound channels, but the title music is distoted as hell. I can't listen it to long. But everything except of this is sabsolutely stunning!
