Corescape - Check out this rather cool Shoot 'em up for the Commodore 64 by drmortalwombat

Thanks to another heads up from a good friend of ours , we've been told that if you're looking for a rather cool looking game for your Commodore 64, then make sure to check out drmortalwombat's latest game release of 'Corescape'; An arcade shoot 'em up in which you must battle your way out of galactic hub space station through eight stages of wave blasting action. To coincide with this news, we've got some new footage of the game being played below.

Here's the latest from the website . "After your last trade of corefakeium crystals went sideways (your business associates decided to rat you out to the authorities to keep the merchandise, money, and the bounty), you are once again trying to escape from the evil galactic empire (is there such a thing as a decent galactic empire?). Luckily, your chances are great; you are only at the core of the main galactic hub space station where all of the empire's fleet is stationed".

"Battle your way out through eight stages in a constant race forward – you have not been voted the 'Best-looking blockade runner of the interior systems' for the last three years to be caught by the authorities. Collect additional lives and credits (score) on the way out".

  1. Very impressive: Full screen forced vertical scrolling + sideway scrolling, parallax background with dynamic shadows, and lots of sprites

I don't like the graphical style at all. Beveled metal with coarse black outlines & dithering is quite frankly a horrible mix.

But as a whole it demonstrates so much potential for the vetical shooter genre.

    1. The sideway scrolling is a bit of a double-edged sword as it hides the "switches" that open the barriers. Too many cheap deaths occur because of that design. There should be a little arrow that appears on the side of the screen when a "switch" is coming up when it isn't in view so that you know to move that way to access it. Furthermore, there's too many tight areas to fly through. It seems the replayability of this is due to frustration caused by the design. Not well done really.

    2. It hurts my eyes too. Classic example of coder overreach, a good game isn't enough they have to do the graphics as well even though the scene is swarming with artists.

  6. Really really excellent soundtrack by Crisps, fitting the action perfectly. Would be only half as good without.
