I'm sure many of you remember Dune II, one of the greatest RTS games of our time, an all time classic developed by one of the greatest developers Westwood, which was released for the Amiga, MS-DOS and a later release on the Sega Megadrive in 93. Well if you do remember it ( more specifically the Amiga version ), then at some point Robert Koon, who was part of the original Dune 2 team at Westwood, will be releasing a new Amiga AGA and OCS remaster. A new version of the game which is sure to excite many in the Amiga community.
The FULL introduction sequence from the DOS version (sans audio, that is in the works) has been ported to AGA and it runs seamlessly from floppy disk across two disks.
Here's the latest from the Patreon page about this Amiga AGA/OCS remaster. "Dune II on the Amiga was a really popular game. Most gaming magazines gave it rave reviews and it can consistently be found on "Best Amiga Games Ever"-type lists. Despite all of those accolades, the game on the Amiga wasn't as good as it could have been. The game shipped on 5 disks and suffered from extensive disk swapping. Most of the great introduction sequence from the DOS version was chopped down quite a bit".
Null-modem cable game mode for two players? Please? 🙏
ReplyDeleteLOL!! "Null modem??! Its 2024! Ever heard of Roadshow??!
DeleteDon't knock that authentic 1990's side by side gaming experience ;)
DeleteBoth in that case then.
DeleteECS chipset support for the A600 should also be supported
ReplyDeleteECS is a minor upgrade from OCS and is fully compatible with OCS.
DeleteHuh? I never played Dune 2 on Amiga, but I always thought it was well liked? Wasn't there even something like an Addon for it that the PC version never got? Maybe I have been misinformed all these years.
ReplyDeleteIt was very well received, as stated above. It did lack a few features that you got on the PC version, e.g. the PC version had speech and more music if you had a sufficiently capable sound card.
DeleteLooks great! Good luck!
ReplyDeleteNice!
ReplyDeleteCan't wait - looks promising!
ReplyDeleteWow, this is great news, these are really commendable initiatives, thank you for all the work!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great initiative, Amiga has always lacked the AGA version with the same or better content than the PC version. Maybe even a Command and Conquer style way to control units and give orders.

ReplyDeleteIt would be awesome if multi unit selection could be included. It's the only reason I play C&C over Dune 2.
ReplyDeleteOne of my favorites Amiga games...can't wait....
ReplyDeleteBacked, a wonderful project and yet another excuse to play through one of my favourite games.
ReplyDeleteBitte auch mehrere Einheiten gleichzeitig
ReplyDeleteIt would be great if the remastered version could run on a vanilla CD32 too! Main advantage: no disk swapping, so faster loading times! There was a Sega megadrive version in the past, so who knows!
ReplyDeleteI hope it succeeds, Dune II kept my brother entertained on the Amiga for years.
ReplyDeleteNot only would I love to see this return, but I'd like to see Dune 2000 make a comeback as well. I spent many weekends playing them on both Amiga and PC.
ReplyDeleteHad this game installed on my A1200HD, I have a WGA adapter too and that was the ONLY game I could play on VGA.
ReplyDeleteIt was barely playable in an A1200, later missions literally crawled, impossible to play in an A500
And yes, an extremely inferior version compared to the DOS, I hope this project fix this!
I played this on amiga 500 and as always the amiga port didnt get much love. No soundtrack, lacking animations & the game would slow down horribly the on larger maps with many units. Pretty much unplayable sometimes.
ReplyDeletePlayed this on amiga 500. Bad port and pretty much unplayable sometimes. So this is really cool.
ReplyDeleteOriginal runs great on my Amiga 500 with 030/40MHz.
DeleteI don't do Patreon but will definitely buy the remastered game when it is released. I loved the original, played it on my Amiga 2000, 1200 and even a CD32 via a floppy adapter. (Not sure if they made a native CD32 version.) I don't remember any slowdown, and there was definitely a soundtrack, albeit just simple ambient music. All of my Amigas had 2MB+ of RAM though - maybe the soundtrack needed this to work?
ReplyDeleteThank you Mr Koon - I'm really looking forward to this. One piece of feedback - Given that almost nobody will be playing this from floppies, my vote is not to try and reduce the disk count. Let's have as much cool stuff on there as you can fit! Audio, language, cutscenes, whatever you like! Whether we are running on original hardware or an emulator, I'd say that 99% of users will be installing the game on a hard drive or virtual equivalent, so the disk swapping won't be a problem.
