Mega Splatterhouse - 1988/89 Arcade Splatterhouse gets a Sega Mega Drive demo!!

With the Caffeine just about kicking in and a HOT news story that's well worth a mention. We've just been informed by the Scorpion Engine creator Earok, that Monster Bath Games Inc has released an early demo of the upcoming game of 'Mega Splatterhouse ' for the Sega Genesis/MegaDrive. An epic and very gory side scrolling slasher which most of us know as 'Splatterhouse'! As in the words of the creator "This is a fan port of Splatterhouse I've been working on to learn the ropes of Sega Megadrive/Genesis development".

For those of you who never played the original at the Arcades or the TurboGrafx-16, FM Towns Marty version, here's what the wikipedia page says about the game "Splatterhouse is an arcade-style sidescrolling beat 'em up with platform elements in which the player controls Rick, a parapsychology college major who is trapped inside West Mansion. After his resurrection by the Terror Mask, Rick makes his way through the mansion, fighting off hordes of creatures in a vain attempt to save his girlfriend Jennifer from a grisly fate."

Notes from the Developer:

  • This is a fan port of Splatterhouse I've been working on to learn the ropes of Sega Megadrive/Genesis development.
  • This game will be made free to play on release. For now please enjoy the demo.
  • Please note that this is a ***WORK IN PROGRESS*** and that what is in this demo is not necessarily the final versions of art, color, sound or music. There may be bugs as well. They will be fixed.  There is tuning to be done - it will be done.
  • ***We will not be adding red blood to the game, we will not be adding the cutting room floor sprites/objects/enemies that were not in the final game. We will make adjustments to some things to make it look better with the genesis color palette and will do a few things to show off the genesis abilities over the original game (parallax scrolling etc). ***

  2. Yes, Scorpion engine is a stunning tool seeing games that are arrived so far ! This Mega Splatterhouse has disappointed me, the Sega logo intro is well realized but game code is full of bugs and sprites incoherences, but probably the baddest new for all us is that programmers don't want to create a custom ver. of game (different by original) but a simple port, really a sin.

    1. Cut them some slack, it clearly states the dev is learning how to work with the MegaDrive and that it's a WIP.

    2. I didn't mean to be too critical, about game bugs will be fixed surely, my regret is to see their first video, this seemed like a Splatterhouse with different setup on contents, then several gamers have asked to they about possibility to add some modifications as enemies with red blood (this would been fantastic !) and custom sprites on backgrounds, unfortunately the answer was no, anyway we'll see how will develop this game.

    3. Hi - Dev of the game here. I'd love to know what the bugs are that you have encountered. Your post was not helpful.

To address the addition of red blood in the game - I'm the one making the game yet I've had several people come on to my Youtube channel to harass me into doing what they want - even stating that Namco is not my boss, yet here they are trying to act like they're my boss. It doesn't work. I don't care. If you were paying me to make the game - sure. But no one is, I'll make it the way I see fit and the way I want to.

If you want a version of Splatterhouse with more gore and red blood etc, make it yourself. Like I've stated, I'm doing this to learn how to use the engine - not indulge other people's fantasies.

Nobody owes you anything and I won't be bullied into doing it.

      - Chris

    4. Hello Chris, about other people's claims (included my one), believe me, i can understand you very well, i'm a Resident Evil modder and i experimented same feel during years, the fact is that when people see something interesting, something special, they are like transported by desire, it's an automatic and instinctive reaction, we almost don't notice it, i know that all this is frustrating for the person concerned.
Talking about myself, i've just hoped that what i have thought was what you wanted to do, i didn't allow myself to come and harass you by demanding what you don't want to do, this is YOUR game and you have the right to do all you want on it.
I tested your demo with 2 different Genesis emulators >> about bugs of your game code, i satisfy you right away :
1- when you take the stick, the top edge (of the stick) is cut off [ sprite incoherence ]
2- on arcade game, the slide can only be performed by jumping forward, instead on your code, this is performed in every situation (really annoying !), then jumping up but even jumping forward with repeated kicks, at the end jump the slide starts.
3- always talking about slide, when performed, if you have a weapon, this one moves irregularly [ sprite incoherence ].
4- with a weapon, if you perform the slide to left, at the edge of the screen, the character literally goes off the screen, then reappear with the invisible weapon (really annoying !) and from this moment the slide is no longer executable (!!).
5- in the submerged underground, sometimes the water movement animation under the character disappears.

    6. Hey Chris

You are doing a great job. The megadrive got some great arcade ports, your Splatterhouse port is a welcome addition.

  3. Bugs are part of a game development.
    Nothing new here.
They'll be fixed in time, they just need to be reported.
Anyway, there's no reason to trigger such controversy here.
We're just talking about a game you know...

    1. You are right, i hope bugs i reported here will be helpful for dev to refine his game code and i add that always is nice when someone create a new game/port for every retro machine.

  4. Some strange comments there, a almost perfect arcade port is what most people would want. Don't understand entitled people with a chip on their sholuder having a go at fan made games made in their own time. This looks great !
