Toki was an awesome arcade shooter platformer that was released way back in 1989 by a designer by the name of Akira Sakuma for systems such as the NES, Sega Mega Drive, Atari Lynx, Atari ST, Amiga & Commodore 64. In it you played as an enhanced Ape transformed from a Human that could shoot energy balls from his mouth defeating strange creatures and finally an evil Wizard. Well If you remember this truly great game, you'll be pleased to know that at some point in the near future, you'll be able to play a remastered version which is still in development for the C64 by @DavideBottino!

Over 20 months in the making, and now, just like EA Sports says, IT'S IN THE GAME!!📷
Please note it's just the very first test, so there are several #Toki sprites still missing and alignment to fix. @C64Reposts @Indie_RetroNEWS pic.twitter.com/6t4p5JbMc6
While we have mentioned Toki Remastered before much to the delight of the C64 community, here's what the Facebook page says about the game from its first announcement to now. "Toki C64 Remastered, featuring 100% redesigned enemies converted directly from the Arcade to be as true as possible. Please note it's just the very first test, so there are several Toki sprites still missing and alignment to fix! Toki C64 Remastered is a fan-made total makeover of the original conversion of the arcade game Toki released by Ocean for Commodore 64 in 1991".
If everything works out as planned, Toki C64 Remastered will feature:
- - All sprites redrawn from scratch
- - Improved or completely redrawn backgrounds
- - New music and SFX true to the arcade
- - Improved controls
- - Bug fixes
- - All of this will be released on a brand new CRT file you'll be able to download for free.
So yes this is one game we will be watching throughout developments and hope for a non exclusive release at some point during late 2024 or 2025!

ReplyDeleteYou are most welcome *heart*
DeleteI've been waiting for years for someone to make the original Toki for the Sega Megadrive, I hope someone reads this and wants to create it 😄
ReplyDeleteHave no idea if it's doable, but if the Amiga version game can be imported into the programming tool the Scorpion Engine and some clean up is done between the two versions across the hardware differences, music and color tweaks, it could in theory be exported as a Genesis / Mega Drive game. Mind you that is a very big 'if', especially if the game has been compiled to machine code. The Amiga version would be the target as it's very close to being arcade perfect already.
DeleteAwesom news as always!
ReplyDeleteFinally a version "The way it meant to be played" of Toki for C64.
ReplyDeleteI impressed by the great results. This going to be the game of the year. I am wondering if it will also have sound effects while the music on?
ReplyDeleteThe work on the visuals is amazing for the C64. The original version of C64 Toki looks wrong, with the main sprite looking drab and depressed. The same treatment is needed for The New Zealand Story and some of the sprites in Rainbow Islands - all great games and play well but need some extra TLC to make them shine.
ReplyDeleteNot a huge fan of Toki but going by accuracy of the port this is pretty ace.
