Toki C64 Remastered gets new footage and it still looks AWESOME [UPDATE]

Toki was an awesome arcade shooter platformer that was released way back in 1989 by a designer by the name of Akira Sakuma for systems such as the NES, Sega Mega Drive, Atari Lynx, Atari ST, Amiga & Commodore 64. In it you played as an enhanced Ape transformed from a Human that could shoot energy balls from his mouth defeating strange creatures and finally an evil Wizard. Well If you remember this truly great game, you'll be pleased to know that at some point in the near future, you'll be able to play a remastered version which is still in development for the C64 by the Remastered Team!

While we have mentioned Toki Remastered before much to the delight of the C64 community, here's what the Facebook page says about the game. "After months of intense pixel pushing, I'm proud to show the complete remake of Level 1, now with fully redesigned backgrounds and sprites! From the lush mountain scenery to the iconic ground pattern and the chunky vine tangles, everything has been reworked to stay true to the arcade original, while optimizing for both CRTs and modern displays. The limitations of the original C64 version (only 91 unique 2x2 tiles and a 256-character map) made this a serious challenge, but I’m thrilled with the final result. This is the version of Level 1 I’ve always seen in my head—now finally real".

  • Toki C64 Remastered is a fan-made total makeover of the original conversion of the arcade game Toki released by Ocean for Commodore 64 in 1991
  •  Graphics & Coordination: Davide Bottino
  • Reverse Engineering, Coding & Tools (in order of joining): Mariano Cigliano, Pasquale Sannino, Euan Gamble, Martin Piper, Knight Rider, Oziphantom, and last but not least, ******* ****** (surprise, surprise!).
  • Music: Aldo Chiummo
  • Original Game Team
  • Coding: Al Dukes
  • Backgrounds: Bill Harbison
  • Music: Keith Tinman

So yes this is one game we will be watching throughout developments and hope for a non exclusive release at some point during late 2025!

  2. I've been waiting for years for someone to make the original Toki for the Sega Megadrive, I hope someone reads this and wants to create it 😄

    1. Have no idea if it's doable, but if the Amiga version game can be imported into the programming tool the Scorpion Engine and some clean up is done between the two versions across the hardware differences, music and color tweaks, it could in theory be exported as a Genesis / Mega Drive game. Mind you that is a very big 'if', especially if the game has been compiled to machine code. The Amiga version would be the target as it's very close to being arcade perfect already.

  5. I impressed by the great results. This going to be the game of the year. I am wondering if it will also have sound effects while the music on?

  6. The work on the visuals is amazing for the C64. The original version of C64 Toki looks wrong, with the main sprite looking drab and depressed. The same treatment is needed for The New Zealand Story and some of the sprites in Rainbow Islands - all great games and play well but need some extra TLC to make them shine.

  7. Not a huge fan of Toki but going by accuracy of the port this is pretty ace.

  9. I'm very happy seeing old C64 games upgraded for other / new media. Like CRT files or REU expanded machines. However, I also respect old originals for being focused on working from tapes. It's easy to neglect this fact today, but back in the days it was one of the most important concerns, affecting all design decisions. Even the concept of the game itself. Obviously, arcade conversions had to be multiload, but even so - quite abridged in many ways to keep game playable on tape-drive based machines.

  10. Ormai avete detto tutto. Quindi non posso fare altro che ripetere le stesse vostre impressioni: stupendo, ci voleva un remake in tal senso per il leggendario C=64 !!

The new sprites are really impressive, thanks for the good work!

  16. WOW it looks great. Would it be possible to combine sound effects with music in-game? There really feels like there's something missing with no background music.

  18. Awesome job! The sprite work is really good & really helps to lift the c64 version to where it should have been. I've always loved this game and comparing it against the original to see the differences is well worth while. The original really made some strange colour choices for the sprites.

  19. I think when Toke Remastered will be released this will be the C=64 game of the year, deserving a golden joystick. I am wondering whether the mountains on the background of level could be improved with more details, and with the distant mountains having a darker colour to give the idea of having a great amount of distance between each other, also adding smoke to one of the volcanoes.

    1. Thank you for your kind words, I really hope my vision for Toki will meet people's expectations! I'd really love to improve level 1 further, the mountains are somewhat crude, and the only cause for that is there are not enough tiles AND chars! To make room for the mountains that you see now I had to make painful cuts, such as drastically reducing grass and leaves tiles, which are nice but less important. I worked hard to find a good balance of variety, details and, above all, color! With that said, if there is a better way to render the mountains with the current number of tiles, I WILL find it !

  20. I was really disappointed in every way by the poor CPC remake. This C64 conversion finally seems to do Toki justice. Congratulations, I'm amazed!
