Thanks to a heads up by Xenomorph we've been told that Andrea "Mr. DVG" Pastore has released their latest game of IL MARINAIO, a brand-new Amstrad CPC release built entirely from scratch in pure Z80 assembly language with the help of AI. Inspired by the iconic 1982 game Popeye from the arcades , the game hopefully captures the charm of the original. Players step into the shoes of a lovesick sailor tasked with catching hearts, musical notes, and love letters dropped from above by his sweetheart, all while staying clear of the freezing waters below. Standing in his way is a brutish bully who stalks the stages, alongside a bottle-flinging witch who begins hurling bouncing skulls at higher difficulty rounds. Fortunately, the classic spinach power-up makes a welcome return, granting temporary invincibility and allowing the nimble sailor to knock his rival into the sea with a satisfying punch.
The game unfolds across three faithfully recreated stages, packed with environmental mechanics with 16-colour Mode 0 graphics. Players will navigate the Docks to capture 24 hearts, utilizing a well-placed bucket to trap the bully's head; move to the Streets to gather 16 musical notes under a moon using a seesaw catapult; and finally board the Ship to spell out H-E-L-P, evading a diving bird to scale the main mast. As for game features, it runs at 25 updates per second using flicker-free double buffering, has custom AY-chip sound effects—including retro-styled crunch when landing a hit, and includes menus, high-score tracking, and gameplay configuration toggles to customize lives and starting levels.
